Traditional Indian home entrance with pillars

For many families in Uttarakhand, Vastu Shastra is part of choosing a home — whether you follow it closely or simply prefer a home that "feels right". Here are the points buyers most often look at, explained simply, so you can check them during a site visit.

Vastu is a traditional belief system. Use it alongside the practical checks — papers, construction quality, water and location — not instead of them.

Direction of the main entrance

  • East- and north-facing entrances are the most preferred, associated with morning light and positive energy
  • North-east is considered especially auspicious
  • South- and west-facing homes are not automatically a problem — many Vastu practitioners say they work well with the right internal layout, and they can attract fewer competing buyers

In listings, "east-facing" or "north-facing" usually refers to the direction of the main door or the road the plot faces. Confirm it with a phone compass on site.

Shape of the plot

Square and rectangular plots are preferred. Irregular shapes and cut corners — especially a cut north-east corner — are generally avoided. If you're buying a plot in Rudrapur, check the shape against the registry map.

Room placement

  • Kitchen: south-east (the fire corner) is preferred, with the cook facing east
  • Master bedroom: south-west, for stability
  • Puja room: north-east
  • Living room: north or east
  • Toilets: away from the north-east corner, ideally north-west or west
  • Staircase: south, west or south-west

Light, air and water

Many Vastu principles line up with good design: plenty of natural light from the east and north, cross-ventilation, and water storage (borewell, underground tank) in the north or north-east, with overhead tanks in the south-west.

Practical tips for buyers

  • Don't reject a good home over one point. Many issues can be balanced by changing room use or making small changes
  • Prioritise the essentials: entrance direction, kitchen and master bedroom
  • Get the papers right first: no Vastu feature makes up for an unclear title — see our document checklist
  • Building your own? Share your Vastu preferences with your architect before the map is drawn
